One major concern with the amount of discretion officers have is their power to decide when to use force or when to use lethal force. Some may say that prejudice toward certain ethnicities may be the root cause of this recent influx. Taser guns in some instances can be a form of deadly force.
Citizens who have been attacked have been left with physical and emotional scars that can never go away in some cases, it has even caused death. The supreme court has interpreted the constitution and has provided general guidelines for police officers to follow although these guidelines are set, police officers are not strictly bound by these guidelines. The use of force policies for many departments are somewhat vague.
This leaves room for maximum discretion on behalf of the individual officer who must decide when to use force. They argue that there are a number of deaths that are caused by tasers and they urge police departments to avoid using this technique at least until more studies are performed to ensure safety (anglens, 2004). By considering all these violations, it is assumed that the conviction of an officer inrelation to violence is revered with much fervor.
